Former National Football League player Antonio Brown is heading to Miami to confront an murder attempt allegation stemming from a shooting that happened in May, with his lawyer filing a not guilty declaration on his behalf.

Detention documents in Essex, New Jersey, indicate that Brown was freed on Tuesday morning for his relocation to Florida. Brown, among the most famous athletes in the National Football League, had forgone extradition to Florida from New Jersey, in which he was held after being arrested in the city of Dubai.

Brown’s counsel, Mark Eiglarsh, stated in an communication that he has earlier lodged a documented innocent plea to the attempted murder charge. Brown could be in a Miami hearing as early as Wednesday early for a bail proceeding, Eiglarsh added.

According to his apprehension document, Brown is alleged of taking a pistol from a protection guard after a celebrity fighting bout in May and firing two shots at a man he had fought with before. The reported target, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, informed authorities that one of the bullets touched his neck.

Eiglarsh said that Brown was only protecting himself from Nantambu.

“The measures he was compelled to take were solely in self-protection against the reported person’s hostile conduct. Brown was attacked that night and acted within his legal right to protect himself,” Eiglarsh said.

Brown was not right away arrested because originally authorities did not recognize Nantambu as a victim. It not until later in May that Nantambu provided a complete account about the situation to officers and pointed out Brown as the perpetrator, the affidavit says.

From his digital content, Brown had been residing in Dubai for multiple months. In a message after the incident, Brown said he was protecting himself because he was “assaulted by multiple individuals who sought to take my possessions and bring physical harm to me.”

A level two murder attempt charge in Florida imposes a maximum 15-year prison penalty and up to a $10,000 fine in the event of a conviction.

Brown has faced multiple judicial challenges over the time. He previously had been charged of battery of a truck operator, several family violence charges, failure to pay child support and further incidents.

During a recent game with the Buccaneers against the Jets, Brown took off his jersey, equipment and handwear and exited the field, resulting in his dismissal by the Buccaneers and effectively ending his NFL journey.

Brown, who had 12 years in the league, was an All-Pro player who passed the majority of his career with the Steelers. For his time, Brown had 928 grabs for over 12,291 gains, the twenty-eighth greatest of history. He was a 7-time Pro Bowl selection.
